Women. It is quite disheartening that the ones who play the most complex roles in life are not well protected in our country especially in our state. Just a few months back a news paper article said, " A recent report on the performance of the states in combating domestic violence shows that Bengal has failed to put in place even the rudiments of the system envisaged by the legislation passed at least a year ago."

The Protection of Women from the Domestic Violence Act, 2005 was enforced on 26th October, 2006. It is primarily meant to provide protection to the wife or female live-in partner from domestic violence. But the ambit extends to women who are sisters, widows or mothers.

The Act, accepted by the majority, unfortunately has also been criticised for being biased.

The Presence- Pinki Ghosh, 2nd year, A

As the darkness creeps its way
into the brightness of the day,
rises the fear,
which had managed to disappear,
bringing back a lash of things bygone
reminding me that i am all alone
with the sinking sun,
Off goes all the meriment and fun..
Last hour all were here, now there are none..
All that remains in the mind is tremor
the fright of silence with its whispers and murmurs..
Now i feel alone, all alone
With creepy insects, skeletons and bones..

Yet hark- a beam of hope and a ray of spark
Shatters the killing sensation of the dark.
From where does it appear to kill my fear,
to wipe my tear...?
Whose is the presence?
Feel someone right beside me
someone imperishable
neither a fairy from a fable
nor an angel from God's stable
but a super power
an ideology..
My own Imagination
perhaps my own creation!
Someone who resides in my innermost soul..
who makes me do good even if i fall
who? God or something else, Who? Who?
